Hi All,

I have a 2004 XG350 w/ 52K miles. I notice a metallic clunk/thud/clang noise that occurs only during the initial acceleration after I start the car up, and only once at some point between 10-18mph. Sounds similar to what you might hear if you drive over a loose metal storm grate or man-hole cover in the road, but, no, I'm not driving over storm grates or man-holes or bumps in the road when I hear the noise. I'm just smoothly accelerating from 0 to maybe 20-25mph after I leave my driveway or pull out of a parking space in a lot on smooth, flat road surfaces.

I don't notice anything abnormal with the acceleration or the way the car drives beyond that one strange noise. I don't hear the noise any other time while driving, such as when I stop at a stop sign or red light then accelerate. The noise only occurs on the initial acceleration after I first start the car. The noise occurs if I have the car in Drive or if I use the manual override and keep it in 2nd and accelerate to 20mph.

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I'm taking it to the dealer Friday, but would like to know what others might have experienced.

Update...dealer claims the sound is normal - the ABS pump cycling(?)
Heck of a sound for a "normal" function on a car is all I have to say.

I agree with you that this sort of noise shouldn't be normal, but attached is a copy of a Hyundai technical service bulletin substantiating the dealer's assessment.

noise is normal, it's the abs pump doing it's self check. everytime you start the vehicle and drive off you will experience that.
