HI. I HAVE A 1995 LANTRA GLS 1.8 AUTO. THE WATER PUMP SHAFT SEAL IS LEAKING ABOUT 125ML A WEEK. I REALLY CAN NOT AFFORD TO GET IT DONE YET. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF A SUDDEN MAJOR BLOW OUT.
COULD IT POSSIBILY LAST A YEAR WHEN I WILL GET THE TIMING BELT AND SEAL DONE AT THE SAME TIME.
THANKS.
LYAL.

Hi,
Having had my water pump fail, I can attest that it can be a very expensive proposition to leave for too long. I had a leaking waterpump similar to yours. I also had the misfortune to get caught in a traffic jam when the water evaporated to a critical point where steam gushed out and nailed the final nail into the water pumps coffin. Driving then became a series of 5 kilometre hops between refills and I was fortunate not to do major expensive damage.
Being somewaht mechanically apt (not professional) I endeavoured to replace the pump myself but had to call in the experts to complete the job. Shortly afterwards, I had to do the timing belt. Double strip down. OUCH!(Take that wallet!)
What it means to you is, if you can gather the readies to do both jobs NOW rather than stress yourself out for a year, DO IT. Don't wait.
Your brain and body will love you for it
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Andrew
