is my 09 accent california emissions?
hello,
to be fair, I am posting on other good forums as well.
2009 accent manual trans
the dreaded check engine light. the one I am getting is p2096. P2096 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean Bank 1. I tried replacing the original oxygen sensors with aftermarket oxygen sensors. I know many disagree with using aftermarket parts, or in pericular, oxygen sensors, but the same code came back. lets assume the sensors are all working as intended and that, indeed, the CAT needs to be replaced.
the first question I need to ask is:
how many catalytic converters does this car have?
the second question:
is my accent california emissions?
there is a sticker under the hood, and it says this:
hyundai motor corporation
vehicle emission control information
conforms to regulation - 2009 MY
U.S.EPA: T2B5 LDV OBD: CA II fuel: gasoline
california: ULEV II PC OBD: CA II fuel: gasoline
no adjustments needed
HJO2S(2)/WU-TWC/TWC/SFI
group: 9HYXV01.6MW5
evap: 9HYXR0120PDM
E20
32450-26722
all discussion is welcomed. thanks.

From the sticker, California: ULEV II PC OBD: CA II fuel: gasoline
That means it is a California emissions vehicle.
If it wasn't then it would say Federal Emissions.
Usually on a four cylinder, there are two cats. One just after the exhaust port.
You can see the up stream O2 sensor there.
The second is after the flex pipe and the O2 sensor is after that.
Each O2 sensor is different in that the first one reading are wide and varied
The second one should be less changes cause the cat is taking care of the emissions
Depending upon where you live and the state laws, a different cat may be used or not.

ah, a neighbor from albany area. I'm from syracuse.
"From the sticker, California: ULEV II PC OBD: CA II fuel: gasoline

I am yet to find a newer accent that is federal emissions. I visit junk yards and all the stickers are exactly like mine. california.
"Usually on a four cylinder, there are two cats. One just after the exhaust port."
at the junk yard, they are not supposed to sell catalytic converters, and remove them when the vehicle is put in the yard, but the 05 to 11 accents with the two cats, they don't bother with the front cat. they only remove the rear cat. the hyundai websites (the first to come to mind is jimellishyundai) doesn't label the front cat as a cat, but I must admit that I can't recall whether the front cat can be purchased either from them.
"Depending upon where you live and the state laws, a different cat may be used or not. "
yeah. I don't think new yorkers are allowed to use a federal (universal) cat to replace a california cat. I also don't think the pcm would allow a federal cat. I think the pcm would either display incomplete testing monitors or throw a code or somehow disallow the reading during the inspection procedure. you know how they plug into the obd2 port when you get the car inspected? I can't see it being possible to pass inspection with a california emissions car and a federal cat. it's a savings of about $300, so the temptation is definitely there.
appreciate the reply.

No one will sell you a non CARB (California Air Resource Board) compliant cat for your vehicle.
The cat has a CARB number.
They have to be registered by the installer and that information sent to the state.
More bureaucracy to make living in NYS harder.
Definitely not a good idea to try to pass emissions with a federal cat.
Sometimes cleaning and re-gap spark plugs along with changing the air filter
And cleaning the MAF sensor can help
Good luck
