Default 2001 Elantra Tachometer

Hi,

I recently bought a 2001 Elantra. The problem I am having is my Tachometer is not working. It works for some times and then stops. This is not happening with a pattern, all random.

Today I noticed that the harness connector of my CKP (crank position sensor) is damaged and the previous owner had assembled it with some tightening wires. According to the repair manual CKP sends the signals to ECM which is used to calculate RPM. So can the harness connector be my problems to tachometer?

My engine works fine and I am getting 9 Km/L in city limits. sometimes I have noticed that my engine idling speed is little bit fast. One of those occasions, the tachometer worked and I found RPM is over 1400. It slowly comes to around 700. Other than that I have no other problem.

Could someone please let me know what are the other symptoms of bad CKP.

Thanks.
A.

P.S. this is my first post.

If your engine is running fine then the CKP is OK.
Your tachometer problem is caused by a fault with the dashboard.
If you remove it you will see a number of brass screws used to connect the signals to the clocks.
Remove each screw one at a time and apply some switch cleaner. Replace the screws and you should find your tachometer problems have gone.

It is caused by poor contact between the screw and the connector on the pcb on the clock itself.
