Default Location of the OBD2 port makes using a scangauge impossible?

I have a 2011 Elantra. The OBD2 port is located in the fuse box area, which is protected by a cover. It is below the steering wheel, on the left side. Because it is the wife’s car, she wants the cover on. Using the standard or rt/lt cable doesn’t make a difference because of the cover (But the rt/lt side would work if the recessed opening wasn’t there, I think.). Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions for this problem? I would like to use the scangauge in this car, but can’t because of the cover of the fuse box.
