Default 20T for pulling a boat?

I have a 2007 Santa Fe that I have been using to tow my 17' I/O boat. I am going for another Santa Fe, but am balking at the price of a Limited. One of the sales guys says he tows a bass boat with his Santa Fe 2.0T. He says it has the horse power to tow my boat too.

My 3.3 AWD is excellent at the boat dock. It pulls my boat out with no slippage unlike the 4X4 trucks that chatter and squeal all over the place even when pulling an empty trailer out of the water.

I just question whether a 4 cylinder can tow any boat as well as a V6. I also wonder why Hyundai has eliminated the V6 on Sports.

Any thoughts?

First, the Santa Fe Sport has never has a V6. Since the 2013 redesign, the 3rd generation Santa Fe came as Sport (short wheelbase, 2-row only, 2.4L standard, 2.0T optional) or standard (long wheelbase, 3-row optional, V6 standard).

Second, it's not horsepower you want for towing, it's torque.

Are you looking to get AWD with the 2.0T?

2014 Sport AWD:
- 2.4L = 190 hp / 181 ft-lbs / 2000 lbs towing
- 2.0T = 264 hp / 269 ft-lbs / 3500 lbs towing

2014 Standard AWD:
- 3.3L = 290 hp / 252 ft-lbs / 5000 lbs towing

Let's put that in perspective. You didn't say what engine you have in your 2007 Santa Fe so I'll list the 2 available V6's:

2007 Santa Fe AWD V6:
- 2.7L = 185 hp / 183 ft-lbs / 2800 lbs towing
- 3.3L = 242 hp / 226 ft-lbs / 3500 lbs towing

So, even if your 2007 has the larger 3.3L V6, the 2.0T in the 2014 Sport has more horsepower and torque with the same tow rating.

Nova,

That does put it into perspective. I do have the 3.3, and it tows my boat well on the road and on the boat ramp. So, it looks like the 2.0T would do a better job at both. I guess I would have never dreamed a 4-cyl engine could do that.

Thanks so much for your input.

Daniel
