I have a 2008 Hyundai Tuscson V6 and I noticed some oil on my driveway...so I inspected underneath and saw a drop on the oil pan plug.

What should you torque the oil pan plug to? I've heard of people using 3/8" torque wrenches just to be sure, but I have no idea what torque would be appropriate....and I definitely don't want to strip the threads. I'm always afraid of over-tightening with a regular socket on the oil pan plug. Naturally, I couldn't find this in the manual as it's a bit specific....


Any input would be appreciated.

26-33 lb-ft (35-45 Nm, 350-450 kgf.cm)
But the actual torque isn't what's most important to prevent leaks, the gasket is. I never use a torque wrench on the drain plug. I just get it nice an snug. Not too tight and not too loose. However, there is a aluminum gasket (a crush washer) for the plug and it should be replaced every time you drain the oil.

 

yeah i actually found in the manual the recommended torque...must have just overlooked it. Tigthened it to 30 foot-pounds last night...it was looser than that, so checked this morning under the car and didn't notice any oil on the driveway.

Where do you obtain those washers? Are they some special propietary Hyundai thing, or pretty standard and available at someplace like Advanced Auto Parts? Expensive?

We bought ours from CarMax and I've done both oil changes since we've owned it, and never noticed any sort of washer on the plug.

I just changes the oil in my Sonata this morning and the old washer was lying in the drain pan. They look like this:



Standard 14mm aluminum crush washer. You can get them from the dealership or any auto parts store for $0.70 to $1 a piece. I've heard you can find them in larger quantities (100+) for a nickel each on Ebay, you just spend as much or more on shipping and handling.

 

^^^ Notice the ridge in that used washer? That's the reason why you replace it every time. I get mine from an online parts service. I buy them when I buy my OEM filters. I pay $0.85 for each gasket and $4.93 for each filter. I usually buy in bulk. 12 gaskets and 12 filters in one order. That covers my both my cars for 2 years.

 

NR - Who or where are buying filter from? Price is very competative.

Nope, I also get the cartridge filters for the 3.8L Lambda in my wifes Sedona from them.

 

I guess I'll have to dig deeper. I just did a search for "filter" in the box at the top of the site. I couldn't remember how old or new your Sedona was. This is getting off topic, so I'm done.
