I still use my '91 Excel hatchback. I got a quote for a head gasket with installation of $689.00. Does this sound about right?

thats actually not too bad, its no small job by an means. The head needs to be completely removed from the block to replace gasket. There are different options available depending on how severe the problem is. check out this link-
