So, you turn the key and get a "hum" like an electric motor is running, but the engine isn't turning over.

You release the key and then turn it again, get the same thing above.

You release the key again then turn it and still the same "hum".

You release the key, then turn it and then it engages the motor and the engine starts?

OK then.

Again, I'm no mechanic or technician but it sounds to me like the plunger on the starter solednoid isn't traveling far enough to mesh with the flywheel gear.

What could cause this?  I'd guess:

1. it could not lubricated properly and it's sticking,
2. not enough juice to get it there (unlikely b/c you have a fresh battery and it doesn't take much power to activate the solenoid),
3. it could be binding,
4. wherever you had work done didn't actually replace your old starter motor (I hope it's not that one).

But to me it sounds like a starter or starter solenoid issue.

Where did you have the work done?  Was it under warranty?  Was it at a Hyundai dealer?

When I bought the car used, I was told teh warranty doesn't transfer over. I had the work done at Car X.

Thanks so much for your help!

I was told differently about the warranty.  I bought both of mine used and they told me that I don't have the 100k mile warranty but the 60k mile one was transferable.

At any rate, take the car back to Car X and tell them that the problem isn't fixed.  IF they used an aftermarket starter, tell them to send that one back and put in an OEM.  I've had a lot of trouble with aftermarket alternators.  Sometimes a cheaper price doesn't mean a better value because they don't last as long.

Let us know what you decide to do and keep us updated!

No problem!  I hope you are able to find the real cause.  Sometimes these things drag on forever.

Good Luck!

hi, you said you had the starter replaced, and you still hear that noise like the starter motor is turning over but the vehicle doesn't start? it seems as if some of the flexplate/flywheel teeth mayde stripped. you said that it's also intermitten? just a guess since i'm not around the car? where are you located?
