Hi Folks.....heres the scoop, a friend of mine bought her Tiburon new in 04 and last Feb she was told by the dealer that she needed  brake work, now after less than 3000 miles she has a seal leak on her rear caliper which they claim has ruined her caliper. When they "fixed" them back in Feb this is what they claim to have done.
1. Reline back brakes
2. Pad kit for rear disc brakes
3. Machine rotors

Now I am no mechanic and that is why I am hoping some of you wrenchheads:) can tell me if this would be considered normal wear and tear on an 04? It works out to over $1600 in brake work in less than 3000 miles and 10 months. I am suspecious of this dealer as they took her to the cleaners on the selling price and the $1500 extra in extended warranty when she purchased the car.
When they did the brake work back in Feb would they have possibly damaged the caliper they now claim is ruined because it is leaking?

Thanks guys....
Ron

personally i think they should fix the calipers cause if you didn't have a leak before you brought the car in i would think they're the ones who damaged it during the repairs. considering the car have not been an accident after the repairs. $1600 for brakes? is this the price for rear brakes only or front also? normally is see brake jobs for $270 the most and that includes machining rotors. how many miles are on the car? even if the calipers failed shouldn't it be under the original warranty depending on mileage? a brake job normally pays the tech. 2hrs so you figure the dealer's labor rate times 2 plus price of brake pads that should be your total cost. WOW $1600. she got it up the A** with no vaseline.

The pads are a wear item and not covered under warranty (after 12,000 miles).  The calipers, though, ARE covered under the 5 year, 60,000 mile warranty.  Especially if they were okay at the time of the brake service 3000 miles ago, they should be paid for by the dealer because either:
1. The caliper failure has nothing to do with the brake reline and it is a simple warranty item, or,
2. The dealer botched the repair 3000 miles ago, damaging the caliper, and they should pay for the repair out of their own insurance (dealers and shops carry insurance for such things).
