I have a UK 2007 Santa Fe 2.2 CRTD+ 7 seater which has been with the garage for the last 11 days. I dont have the full story from them yet but it looks like clutch, flywheel and for some reason suspension damage after 16,000 miles. Like you I have had manuals all my life, never had to replace a clutch with 45,000 miles a year between my wife, dont tow and drive on ordinary roads. No signs of clutch wear before, just vehicle ground to a halt and smoke poured out of the front.

I strongly suggest all of your problems are due to the hydrolic clutch system hanging up. If you don''t stop driving it right away, it will most certainly burn up your clutch. I had the same thing happen to me three weeks ago. I have a 1999 Elantra with 90,000 miles. The clutch had no signs of going bad, then all of the sudden is was slipping like crazy, almost undrivable. I was able to drive it home, not far away. Like everyone else, I assumed my clutch was bad, so I ordered a new clutch kit from eBay for $73 (a great deal). I had the time and the garage, so I dropped the trans. Much to my suprise, the clutch was fine, no problem. I reassembled my car with the new clutch, and I still had the same problem. I disconnected the hydrolic lines and blew out an obstruction, bled the system clean. Now it works like new. See my other post in the Elantra forum for more information.

Yes, it''s very possible. The "clutch metal" sticking was also my problem. The dealer does not want to admit there is a problem with the hydrolic clutch system. They can charge you for a new clutch this way if it is YOUR fault. And like we see, a new clutch, including flywheel, can cost $2500 My car just started slipping like crazy one day with no prior warning of clutch failure. Lucky I was near home, I didn''t burn the flywheel too bad. I assumed my clutch was bad, took out the transmission, but the clutch was still good. It was some obstruction in the clutch fluid line, or maybe the master or slave. I was able to simply bleed the system, and my problem went away. TO AVOID THIS PROBLEM: PLEASE BLEED YOUR CLUTCH EVERY 20,000 MILES or 30,000 KM
