My '07 Elantra's brakes sound like they're scraping in the morning.  I started noticing the sound when the weather turned cold.  The sound only happens in the morning or the first time I drive the car each day.  I took the car to the dealer and they told me that the brakes are fine and that the sound is normal because of rust dust on the brakes, but with only 15,000 miles on the vehicle, I don't think this should be a problem.  Any insight?

That normal for all cars.  The rotors are bare metal and will rust very slightly when not in use.  The damp air will cause this.  The noise you are hearing is the brake pads scraping away the surface rust.  Again, this is normal for all cars.

I get this on my '06 Sonata as well.

I thought I was getting close to needing new brake pads but now that I've read this thread, I am thinking that the cold does something to the pads/rotors that causes the sound to happen until the rotor/pads warm up a bit with use.  That is why it goes away.  Maybe the cold air creates some crystalization of overnight moisture on the pads and/or rotors that scrape off when you first move the car that make it sound like that.  Not harmful but annoying.

Then again ... my handle is "badwrench" so take my guess with a large chunk of salt.

:-)
