Got a 03 Accent, 1.6 auto. and am getting a cel "thermostat operating below threshold", so replaced the tstat, from autozone, (twice). and the coolant temp sender. the car still over cools, and at freeway speeds, the temp will drop back down to the cold side. im asking if anyones had this problem, car has 70k miles. somehow.. the car is still over cooling, lol. i know its a stupid problem to have. also noticed the old tstat did not have an oring, and neither does the new one.i wonder  if thats the problem. or is the oe (180) degree too cold?

I have an 03 accent with 88k miles and have never seen this. Not being an expert, I wonder if the Autozone tstat is the correct temp.

Maybe it needs a 185 or 190 degree tstat?? only a guess.

I would think that over than some loss of heater output (heat), and possibly gas mileage maybe slightly changes, running cooler is OK.

Sure beats the other extreme!!

well the oem temp is aparently 180. according to irvine hyundai. its just weird that this car did not have an o-ring on the tstat. not initially and not afterwards. ive replaced a few tstats in various cars( vw, toyota, honda, saturn) and they all have orings either around the ring of it, or one you just stuff in behind the tstat. just wondering if anyone else has been having these same problems. it just sux i cant find any decent manuals for hyundais, ive already read that "hyundai service website" which is really lacking on the actual help side. lol, its just a bunch of pictures. anyways. if anyone could help it would be great.

Thermostat gaskets or o-rings are usually designed to prevent leakage from the casting that the holds the thermostat, not to prevent bypass flow around the thermostat itself.  If no leaks exist where the castings is bolted up, I would assume no gasket or o-ring is necessary.  Even if there was some bypass flow, I doubt it would be enough to prevent the engine from attaining operating temperature.

Question: Is it possible the thermostat has been mounted backwards in the casting?  Flow in the wrong direction could keep the thermostat pushed open.  I'll be honest and admit I've never replaced a thermostat on my Hyundai Sonata, but I had this happen to me once on an old Ford Mustang II with a 2.8 liter V6.  It did run cold until I figured out I had installed the thermostat backwards.  Yes, it would fit either way.

in this motor. the tstat will only fit one way. with the spring on the motor side of the system. i just find it werid because on both my vws, the tstat had a oring, and a gasket where the housing mounted to the engine. i just find it strange. i cant think of anything else that would cause a car to overcool, unless the tstat is somehow being bypassed.

true the thermostat only fits one way. when you say the car is overcooling do look at the temp guage and say that's overcooling or your not getting any heat in the car? what you can do is feel the top radiator hose when the car is hot, you shouldn't be able to hold that hose for a long time. also if you take to your dealership, they could connect the scantool and monitor the engine coolant temp and let you know if the car is actually overcooling. you could have a guage issue. just my 2 cents

yeah. im gona see about the gauge being messedup. thats kinda not great that they put the ecu to read off the gauge. .. ill double check the actuall temperature at the rad cap. its just that. the temp does go up. to the required range, but once you drive at highway speeds, the temp will drop.

Is the stat in the right way round & teh lil twiddley thng @ the top ?

Try a dealer part ....... No I'm not going bannas, Mine throws a cel if I use anyones air filters other than OEM ...... Why I dunno ........

Gonna get rid of this car soon, its nasty [&o]

Quick question, why were you replacing thermostate again? Was this due to the code or was there a malfunction? Some older vehicles from 200-2002 would throw the po116 code that was just a reflash, have had to do it on some 03's also. When going with something like a thermostate go OEM only.
