Hi Everybody,

I have a older XG 300 with 117000 miles on the clock.
The problem is at low speeds, below 40 miles an hour, I can feel a wobbling in the steering wheel and when I let it go you even can see it moving.
I had the car checked and the wheels balanced witch didn't help too much.I also rotated the wheels.
At higher speeds the car feels and drives fine.
Is that something I have to except with the older car or is there help.
Who can help me with solving that mystery?

Sometimes an axle can cause a vibration in the steering wheel when accelerating. When coasting it will go away.When does yours do this? If it is only during acceleration then I would suspect a axle problem if it is all times then you might look a little closer at tire problems . A balance may not settle this unless it is balanced on a RFV balance machine.

I will balance the wheels on load (I think thats what you recomended)
If the problem still exists I might try a alignment.
The other thing I remember is, when it shifts from the second into the third it feels like Im driving over a washboard (small little bumbs), just for a second or two after that it drives OK.
Does that sounds like there is something wrong with the axle or gearbox?

It wobbles at all times at speeds less than 40.

I hope the balancing will help.

After balancing and checking everything the problem still exists.

The mechanic said there is no safety concern.

Can there be something wrong with the power steering pump?

Has anybody had the same problems before?

Have you nudged a curb with one of the front wheels.  If this isn't a tire problem (like a slipping belt), I would suspect a bent or warped rim.  You would think the guy balancing the tire would notice, but the safety tubs on the current balancers pretty much block any view of the rotating wheel and tire (and the machine would have trouble balancing the tire).  Bad tie rod ends or a bad strut load bearing/load plate on one side would be my next suspicion.  I don't think a failing power steering pump would create this sort of symptom.  I don't think the problem is related to the half-axles or the gear box.  I do not agree with the mechanic that there is no safety concern.  Vibrations often mean something is eventually going to break or give out prematurely.
