On my 02 Sonata I am having some trouble with the starting. The crank is strong just takes a few extra seconds. I have cleaned the battery terminals, and checked te volts. I have also changed the plugs and wires. Before I go into the coils I am hoping that I can get some extra opinions and see if there is anyone else who has had this problem and solved it.
On a side note my check engine light has come on, I dont think it has anything to do with the starting issue though. The starting issue has been going on since I got the car about 4 months ago. For the check engine light I am curious if there is a way to retrieve the codes without a scanner.
Any help is appreciated.

So the car starts, but it seems to crank on the starter much longer than it use to before starting? Some car part stores (notably Autozone) will pull the codes for you and reset the error in the ECM.
I've had similar symptoms with two vehicles, neither of which were Hyndais. The first involved a loose or leaking vacuum line that was plumbed off the MASS flow sensor on the engine intake. When the car finally started, it idled rough. The check engine light was on. The second car would crank for what seemed like forever, but when it did start, it ran and performed nomally. The check engine light would eventually come on, and the code revealed a fuel pump error. This stymied me and a mechanic bacause a pressure test on the pump would read good pressure and it appeared to have good flow. Another mechanic finally diagnosed the problem as a bad check valve in either the fuel feed or fuel return line. When the car sat, all the fuel in the lines, including the fuel rail on the engine, were draining back to the tank. He noticed by sound that the pump was running an extraoridinary length of time when the ignition key was turned on without engaging the starter. No matter how long the engine cranked, it wasn't going to start until the fuel lines were charged back up. On this car, the check valves were part of the fuel pump itself. A new pump cured the problem.

yea that descrides it exactly, should I get the started tested to see if the teeth have worn out possibly?
