I own a 2004 Elantra with 70,000 miles on it.  My check engine light came on last week and around the same time I started being unable to fill with gas without having the filler tube back up and shut off the gas nozzle repeatedly.  I see several posts related to various gas tank vent components that might be to blame.  My vehicle is no longer under warranty, so my question is: can I replace any of the gas tank vent- related components myself?  I see in one case that replacing the "CCV Air filter" fixed a similar problem.  Is this something I can do myself?

Check the warranty for emissions systems; I think it's something like 8 years, 80,000 miles.  You may still have some warranty left.

It sounds like you have a blocked vent line in the evaporative emissions system.  The charcoal canister is behind the left rear wheel.  I think you can drop it by removing two bolts.  You may want to do that and see if the lines that connect at the top have gas in them.  That would be not good.  I'm not really sure how to repair the system though.

If you want to do something more than taking it to the dealer, let me know and I might be able to dig up some info.

Thanks for the quick reply Doohickie.  I will check with the dealer regarding the warranty coverage first - that would be excellent if they still cover it!  If not, I may look into the canister you mentioned.  I will let you know what comes of it.
