Check Engine

outandabout -> Check Engine (9/20/2005 3:55:28 PM)

2002 Accent 1.5 5speed. Recently my check engine light came on after filling up with gas. Once it hit 1/4 tank it went off but came back on at next fill up. I have always chnged the oil and did regular tuneups. I decided to change the plugs and wire which made a nice improvement in performance and disconnected then re-connected the battery cables to try to fool the computer but the lights stays on. Is it possible that it's the oxegyn sensor going or should I be looking at someting else. Also, I have had a steering whell vibration for quite some time and usually after installing,and balancing new tires it will go awy for awhile but will eventually begin to vibrate. The alignment is right on. Anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks

Vibration could be a bent rim. Have you hit any big pot-holes? As far as the light goes, you may need to replace your fuel filter.

Hey Outandabout,
Could be the 02 sensor however, changing it wouldn't hurt anything either even if it's not the problem. However, if that does not clear things up have a "TRUSTED" mechanic hook ya up to a computer to check the codes. Good Luck!!

I have just thought of something. Have you ever ran out of gas or do you often let the tank get really low before filling up. One more thing do you use fuel injector cleaner every 3000? Sometimes with these newer Accents the injectors tend to get gummed up and some stick open.

Ahhh, you could be right Poach, I drop in about 4 ounces of Marvel Mystery oil in the tank at every fill up. I've done this with every vehicle I have ever owned. Never had any problems.

There you have it! Buy some injector cleaner, fill your tank, and call us in the morning.

my two cents....I have recently learned from a good Hyundai mechanic that if you over-fill, or top off your gas tank.....your engine light will come on....the fix is to remove the cap then put it back on.....
