2002 accent front brake piston

olboggy -> 2002 accent front brake piston (9/22/2005 9:32:29 AM)

I've got the pads and I'm read to start. I'm wondering about the piston. I've got a wrench to open the bleed bolt, but how much force will it take to push the piton back. Also how much fluid is going to come out.

Hi,

You don't actually need to open the bleed valve.

Get yourself a "C clamp of appropriate size and using one of the old pads as protection push the piston back by screwing in the clamp until there is enough room to install the new pads.

Please ask if you need further info.

Hoping this helps.

Cheers,

Andrew

Thanks for replying.
Can it be pushed back with just regular arm and hand, or do I need to grab the pin on the end of the clamp with channel locks, to turn it. I,ve also heard about taking the cap of the brake fluid resevoir does this help. I down loaded instructions from Emitchell and it mentioned the valve.

Thanks
Bill

Hi

The c clamp will work with hand pressure and taking the cap off the resavoir keeps the pressure from building up. I recommend placing a rag under the resavoir to catch any spillage.

Hi,

You won't need to remove the cap or worry about spillage unless you have topped up the reservoir.

The fluid will only return to the level it was when the pads were new.

It's as simple as you think it is.

Take your time and do things logically and progressively. You'll be fine.

Cheers,

Andrew

mind you, if you have ever had a leak in the brake resevoir, you will want to check it once everything is in place.

Hi,

Yes good point.

Personally:25 years and 10 vehicles: Not Once (Who knows? Have blown two wheel cylinders one my very first vehicle at the end of an emergency stop. A couple of "what ifs..." crossed my mind.)

Obviously, it's very easy to check these items routinely and fix them immediately. I can't think of too many reasons why you would have a leaky reservoir for any other reasons other than mishandling or manhandling. It certainly shouldn't be made into a long term issue in the car either. Any wheel cylinder related fluid losses would be obvious to cursory exam as well.

If you know that either the reservoir or wheel cylinder is damaged, isn't it better to fix the damaged one, or get someone else to?

They are both really straight-forward jobs that are well within scope of most peoples ability.

Cheers,

Andrew

have seen abd resevoirs twice..once was ro a kid leaning on it while working on it, and bent soemthing...the other had been filled with motor oil instead of brake fluid, and it ruined the whole system, or mighty near the whole system

I just wanted to thank everyone who replied. It worked like a charm. Now if I could just get the other wheel off.
