but the online manual says replace the timing belt at 60k. why the discrepancy? anybody know?

I just bought this 2004 6 cylinder Sonata with 65k miles on it and I hope I don't have to immediately shell out hundreds of dollars!

Every place I've seen says it needs to be changed ay 60K miles.  However, 90,000 KM is approx 60,000 miles.  Maybe you say 90K kilometers, not miles.  Bottome line, if it hasn't been changed yet, do it soon.

I'm on line with Hyundai right now, but, no, it's not KM it's MILES. The KM are right below that and is given as 144,000 km. I've got a feeling I've been snookered. We bought this Sonata second-hand thinking that it would be a couple years before we had to replace the timing belt. Then, as I said, I go on line to read the manual and the maintenance mentioned there requires replacement at 60k miles.

Oh, oh. I see what happened. SOMEONE HAD TORN A PAGE OUT OF THE MAINTENANCE LOG!! When I traced across the row to check when the next major repairs had to be made, I was going across non-consecutive pages. The 60,000 mile maintenance is missing altogether! It jumps from 15k to 78.75k miles. I'm thinking it was most likely the Ford dealer, where I bought this otherwise quite acceptable Hyundai, who arranged to have the owner's manual missing and then tore the page out of the log, quite seamlessly, btw. Anyway, if I hadn't been too quick test driving the car and had taken my time, I would have seen that the 'R' was for the coolant, not the timing belt which was marked 'I' for inspect. Unfortunately, that was across eight columns and I got it wrong.

Great! I'd say I paid about $460 too much for this used Hyundai!!
