Dash lights and parking lights

Stujak -> Dash lights and parking lights (3/30/2008 1:17:15 PM)

Why do the dash lights go off, if I hold my foot on the break when at a dead stop? I have found that it blows the same fuse all of the time. The parking lights on the driver side also go off when the dash goes black.

It sounds like a hot lead or wire carrying current has come loose under the dash and is being shorted out when you push on the pedal.  I would get a flash light out and then stick my head under the dash to see if the brake pedal mechanism has rubbed the insulation off a wire, presumably a wire leading back to the fuse in question.  You might try replacing the fuse and then depress the pedal by hand while watching to see if an arc or a spark is produced when the short occurs.

My 2001 Accent does the same thing but I do not blow fuses, I have pulled out the instrument cluster but have yet to finf the problem. I will check under the dash Ken99 but for a bad wire.

thx

See if you can get the problem to occur with the key on, but without the engine running.  If you are not blowing fuses, then a relay has to be tripping.  Without the engine and road noise, you might hear the relay click when it trips out.  This might help you trace the problem, which I still think is a shortened wire.

Hi Ken99,
I went under the dash to look for lose or chafed wires that would cause the dash light on/off problem. I put the key in the on position (dash lights were out) and wiggled around wires but I could not get them to flicker on. I found no wires rubbing on the steering wheel assy or brake assy. I did notice that although the dash lights flicker on and off the single bulb that illuminates the odometer never flickers so I think it must be wired in with the other lights like the 4 way flasher light ash tray light radio ETC ECT. Not sure if the relay you are talking about would also make these other lights flicker.
I did find a new problem dealing with my remote started issue that I will write a seperate post.

thx.
