Accent Oil Filter - Help please

Hello, I have a 2001 Accent Automatic Transmission 50000 miles. The Automatic Transmission Fluid is due for a change. Does the ATF has an oil filter? If it does how do I replace it? You help is appreciated.

Yes it does, located just inside the drain pan on the bottom.

Start by buying a new filter kit from a Hyundai dealership or good quality aftermarket filter (I prefer Wix or NAPA filters, but there are other good brands available).  The kit should contain a new filter, a new drain pan gasket and possably new hardware and seals.  Once you've drained the tranmission (the Accent has a drain plug to facilitate this), you have to unbolt the pan and remove it to expose the filter.  There should be mounting bolts in the face of the filter that you will need to undo and then simply pull the filter down away from the transmission.  There should a plastic tube on the filter that is inserted into the transmission body.  When removing the old filter, inspect this tube and the exposed interior of the tranny hole for a seal.  Sometimes there is an o-ring or ribbed seal that sticks inside the tranny when the filter is removed.  You'll need to fish that out before installing the new o-ring or seal with the filter.  Oil up the seal with ATF before you install it on the filter (if seperate) and then oil up the tube and seal before inserting back into the tranny.  Installation is the reverse of removal.  Remember to use (and only use) an SP-III fluid on this transmission.  Do not use Dextron, Mercon or so call "universal" fluids, they are all incompatable with Hyundai transmissions that use the SP-III fluid.  Total capacity is 6.3 US quarts, so I expect you will drain 3 to 3.5 quarts from the transmission.  You'll need to have 4 quarts on hand.

Why only 3 to 3.5 quarts you ask?  About 1/2 of the old ATF is retained in the torque converter and there is no way to drain that out.  If you really want the transmission serviced right, you'll need to have it "flushed" where all the old fluid is displaced by new fluid including that in the torque converter.

P.S. I forgot to mention that you should wipe out the silvery sludge or residue in the bottom of the pan before you bolt the pan back in place.  You should also find a magnet in the pan that should be cleaned and put back in place as well.  The silvery sludge is spent banding material that has been worn off the clutches.  It's normal to find some.  The magnet is there to catch larger metallic pieces that have come loose.  Those should all look like filings.  Anything recognizable (screws, bolts, springs) is not good to find.

I think it does have a filter and not sure but I think you have to drop the pan to do it?

I just go to hyundai and purchase ATF and drain the pan via drain plug and fill it back up.

I do this about every 20K miles, I have done the same to my 1995 Mitsubishi Galant and it just flipped 200K miles.

This is similar to what I practice on my Fords and Nissans, which is about every 30K.  I still change the filter though, and do a full flush at 100 to 120K.  My 95 Taurus still has it's original tranny at 190K, and they are notorius for needing a rebuild ever 90 to 110K.  On newer car specifying longer service intervals, I think the full flush is essential if one follows those guidelines.

This might help:

1. Drain out the automatic transaxle fluid.

2. Remove the oil pan.

3. Remove the oil filter.

No, a manual trans is totally different.  It uses 70-90 weight gear oil instead of automatic trans fluid.

I will do the filter change as well with my next fluid change, Good news Bumbleberry (named by my daughter) is a 2002 not a 2001.
