97 Elantra Oil Pan

bernd -> 97 Elantra Oil Pan (4/20/2008 1:17:04 PM)

I'm rehabbing a 97 Elantra. I've noticed that the oil pan is quite rusty, and now seems to be leaking oil from
somewhere near the bottom of the pan. I'm wondering how big a job replacing the pan is... I see an exhaust pipe
has to be removed, and the cross member. Is the engine mount on the top of the cross member an
issue to remove? I'm already in the middle of the timing belt/water pump combo.

I am considering degreasing the pan throughly and cold welding it, but the rust looks pretty bad.

Thanks! (and no, I can't view the hma service site.. I can't view the 'terms & agreements' page to register)

I'm not sure you'll have to remove the center member.  Once the exhaust is removed, you may have enough room to access the pan bolts and swing the pan down and out.  Just is case, here are the center member removal instructions.

=======================================================

FRONT ROLL STOPPER

Remove the front roll stopper bracket from the center member.

REAR ROLL STOPPER

Remove the rear roll stopper from the center member.

CENTER MEMBER

1.Remove the under cover (R.H.).

2.Remove the front roll stopper mounting bolts.

3.Remove the rear roll stopper mounting bolts.

4.Remove the center member from the body.

I'd look for a donor engine with a decent pan at a salvage yard.  Likely pay less than $20 for the pan.
