Oil Pump Pickup Tube Question - 5/4/2008 4:34:24 PM

'97 Elantra
I am replacing the oil pan, and of course, the oil pump pickup tube is exposed. I am wondering if there is a flat gasket or an O-ring between the tube
assembly and the pump, and if it should be replaced while I have the oil pan off? I am not inclined to take it apart unless I know it should be replaced.
If so, do I need to get the gasket from the dealer or will any parts store have it? Otherwise, I'm ready to put everything back together tomorrow evening (5/5/08)

I'm not sure, but if you don't get a more definitive answer from someone else, I would recommend not messing with it and putting it back together.

Thanks.. I think thats an answer I can live with. I was thinking the age of the gasket may affect the pickup tube seal after a time as there is 192kmi on this car.

Sorry I don't have the exact answer because I've not yet been into a Hyundai engine, but generally, if you have the pan off, you should always replace what's recommended on an oil pump. It is, of course, critical to the health of your power plant. I always rebuilt the oil pump when opening the bottom end of all the V8's I've worked on.

Thanks, but I'm not rebuilding the oil pump. That is accessed from behind the crankshaft pulley, and thats a whole different job in itself. I only have the oil pan off. I was just wondering if the oil pump pickup tube gasket is something that should be replaced while the oil pan is off.

The Hyundai 4-cyl is not a V8. The oil pump is part of the cover attached to the front of the engine. It's not inside the oil pan. Unless there is a problem with the pump, there is no need to rebuild it.

Unless you need to take the tube off the pump or if you can see physical damage to the gasket, there is no need to replace the gasket.
