I need a trailer hitch for my 2006 Sonata and would like to use a class II hitch. I noticed that on Australian and U.K. Hyundai sites the maximum towing weight is 3748 lbs with trailer brakes, 1654 lbs without. In North America it's only 2000 lbs with trailer brakes, a 1000lbs without which limits me to a class I hitch. Why the reduction in towing capacity this side of the pond? Is the Sonata being sold in North America somehow inferior to the one being sold elsewhere in the world? I asked Hyundai customer relations but so far the responses have not been all that informative.

it has to do with Department of Transportation laws....not the car itself
