The car is used by my son,. Back around Easter He cam home with a code on the card, which translated to the purge control valve. Found one of the wires had broke, repaired it and cleared the code. He came home from school the this month and we had to have the vehicle inspected. which it failed. It show the following systems not ready. EGR, Seconday air system, O2 sensor, O2 Heater, Catlyst system. The car has been run almost 1000 miles since then. One guy told me to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes then run it up on the highway at 65 for ten miles, that did not work. One guy told me that the car was not getting hot enough, so I installed another thermostat, which did not correct the problem. I really do not want to just start replacing parts Help Please

Found one of the wires had broke, repaired it and cleared the code. How did your son clear the original error codes? I ask because sometimes disconnecting the battery will reset the check engine light, but on a OBDCII system (which a 98 Sonata should be), disconnecting the battery will not kill the codes stored in memory. The only way I know how to erase error codes is with a code scanner connected to the car. A scanner will also provide you with specific error codes better describing the problems, and confirm or deny that the information obtained by the inspector was real.
