My 2000 Accent (GS 1.5 AT) gets around 24 mpg. I just got it, and I've tried to increase the mileage because I drive a long distance to work. The reviews on the car all say it gets 36MPG on the highway new, so I would expect it would get around 30 now.

I've put on a SRI w/ cone filter. Replaced the fuel filter, plugs and wires, & put on new tires (6lbs under max). I've added Seafoam to the vacuum of the fuel injection, a little in the crank case and the fuel itself. I've also reset the computer.

Also, I drive around 65 on the highway to try to increase it.

Is there anything else I can change to make it more efficient? What about the PCV valve? I would like to think with a 1.5L engine, that I would get at least 30mpg!

I had no idea! The gas station I go to has two pumps (same price) but one says ethanol added. That's the one I've been using this whole time because I thought it was a cleaner, more efficient mix!

I'm not going to use that on my next fill up, and see if I notice a difference.

I still have one question though, what's the PCV valve do, and does it have anything to do with MPG?

PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation.  It's basically a controlled vacuum leak that removes engine oil vapor and gas (blow-by) vapor out of the engine to burn it.  If it's malfunctioning it can affect the MPG.

20% is on the low side!  Ive seen upwards to 30%.

But if you like to help the American Economy, then it shouldnt matter.

have you had your timing belt changed? how many miles on your car? we recently hit the 100,000km mark on our 03. had the timing belt changed as they suggested. our mileage in better then new. Recently went on a road trip. was at 661km pulled in to fill up (the fuel light had been on for a bit) it took 38L to fill it. Still 7L of fuel left.

Yes, change the timing belt! If an old timing belt breaks on an Accent, you''''''''ll destroy the engine! On my 88 Ford Festiva I just had the timing belt & water pump changed for $220. Previously, Festiva got spectacular MPG, then started getting off its feed. Changed sparkplug wires & now the timing belt. Last tank was 44 MPG. Hopefully, MPG will go even higher at times.

As for my wife''s 2008 manual tranny Accent, she averaged 33MPG thru a cold long winter & hard commute. She let me take it for 3 daytrips over 1400, 3000, 4000, & 5500 foot mountain passes nailing down 41.5, 42.6, & 45.2 MPG!

With the new timing belt, Festiva just gave me 51.8MPG. & that was with 3 warmups & traveling over a 5500 foot mountain pass!

So change your timing belt before you destroy your engine. & with careful driving, maybe your MPG will also go up!
