diagnostic codes pre-OBDII

tiopancho -> diagnostic codes pre-OBDII (5/28/2008 9:16:17 AM)

How do I get diagnostic codes from my OBDI Hyundai? I know on Toyota or General motors, you can use a jumper wire and count the flashes on check engine light. Same with Hyundai? Which pins do I jump? I'm working on a 1992 Elantra which may have 1993 or 1994 engine. Thanks

To get the OBD-I codes for 1989-95 Hyundai's you need an analog voltmeter (a voltmeter that has a needle indicator, not a digital readout).   Locate the diagnostic port (usually under the dash on the left side of the steering column) and connect the positive lead to the "MPI" diagnostic pin on the top right corner of the port and connect the negative lead to the ground pin on the lower left corner of the diagnostic port.

Then turn the key to the ON/RUN position on and count the sweeps of the needle on the voltmeter.  For example: A code 13 is shown as 1 sweep of long duration followed by 3 sweeps of short duration. Also if there are more codes, it will be shown in numerical order.

Here are some popular obd1 codes for Hyundai 1989-1995 vehicles:
Code 11 Oxygen sensor
Code 12 Air flow sensor
Code 13 Air temperature sensor
Code 14 Throttle positioner sensor
Code 15 Motor position sensor
Code 21 Engine coolant sensor
Code 22 Crank angle sensor
Code 23 No.1 cylinder top dead center sensor
Code 24 Vehicle speed sensor
Code 25 Barometric pressure sensor
Code 41 Injector
Code 42 Fuel pump
Code 43 EGR
Code 44 Ignition coil fault
Code 59 Oxygen sensor fault
