I am contemplating replacing the head unit in our new (to us) 2006 Sonata. I really like the volume, mute, and mode controls on the steering wheel which work with the factory unit, I doubt they will work with an aftermarket head unit. Anyone successfully retained the use of their wheel controls after replacing the factory stereo? I have no problem installing an aftermarket stereo myself, but I doubt I will rush to do so if it will make the volume controls non functional.

You will probably have to purchase a HU that is compatible with steering wheel controls and then buy the correct adapter harness.

thanks for your reply Nova, any idea what HU might be compatible with these controls? I could call Crutchfield but I don't know if you are referrign to only other Hyundai specific or certain aftermarket HUs.

Thx

I would talk to the pros at Crutchfield.  I'm sure they would know what is or is not available.

Thx for the link, I did speak w/ Crutchfield and they recommended a similar device (may have been the same I''m not 100% sure) at around a $70 price. I will probably end up paying it eventually but am just dealing with the factory radio in the meantime. It works just fine just doesn''t look that great doing it. I also wish the steering wheel controls would allow you to skip tracks on a CD as opposed to just volume, mute, and mode.
