Is there a way to get the fog lights to come on without the headlights? I've had fog lights on every car I've owned since 1986 and this is the first one that I can't seem to do this on. Usually, you just need to turn on the parking lights.

The fog lights are probably designed to work only when the lowbeams are on. This is due to laws in some states that mandate fog light usage. My 2003 4Runner is like this too. Consult your owners manual for more information.

Since all GM cars with fog lights have this capability, I doubt it has anything to do with any US laws. Maybe some other country, though.

Ah, but on GMs, they call them "Daytime Running Lamps."

Let me look around a bit. There is a fairly simply modification you can do with the Elantra to make the fog lamps independent of the headlamps; I bet it's the same on the Sonata.

I put my own fog lamps in my Elantra, and rigged them so that the are only on when the engine is on, and that if I put on my high beams, the fogs automatically shut off. You can do a lot of things with relays. I think the legal issue is that if the high beams are on, the fog lights need to be shut off.

Anyway, let me look at the schematics. I might be able to figure something out.

If you want to look also, go to http://www.hmaservice.com, and register. If they don't send a password to you right away, go back and do the "Forgot Password" stuff (for some reason they only send the password automatically about half the time and you have to tickle it to get your password).

EDIT: Okay, looking at the schematics, you need to make two changes.

1. You have to supply a power source to the fog light switch circuit that is independent of the headlights. You might be able to use the marker light circuit for that. You're just driving a relay, current is minimal. I would do it by cutting the Orange w/ Black stripe wire that runs from pin 15 to 54 on terminal block JE01 of the engine compartment junction block, and connect the wire coming out of pin 54 to the marker light circuit (I'll have to dig up some detail on that).

2. You have to ground the fog light switch circuit to a ground that is independent of the headlights. You can do this right at the switch in the steering column. Here are directions on how to do that for an Elantra: http://www.elantragtclub.com/elantra/id384.html, it's pretty much the same on the Sonata.

Let me know if you're interested in doing this mod and I'll dig up the rest of the info and try to answer any questions. I think there might be people on the forum who are more familiar with the Sonata and can give more detailed instructions on that first part of the mod.

Actually, DRL's work off of the high beams on most GM vehicles. They run at a reduced voltage. The fog lights are usually much lower to the ground.
