badwrench -> timing belt and water pump (6/3/2008 12:27:47 PM)

Hi all,

Trying to find out what a fair price for the swap out if a timing belt on a 2000 Elantra should be in New Jersey.  I was quoted $400 (not at the dealer) plus he suggested I swap out the water pump at the same time.  Other than being in the way and needing to come off anyway to swap out the timing belt (looked it up in the Haynes Manual), is there any reason to do that now if there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it?  I got quoted another $120 for that which I hope the cost of pump is at least $90 or I am going to be insulted.

Before anyone says anything, I did search the forum before asking the questions and did not find the info on the site.  Someone else was quoted $500 (but didn't say where) and some people also said swap out the water pump at the same time but no one said why or if the price was fair.

Thanks.

Now it came up in the related searches box ... *shrug*  Now I know the why but still not sure pricing is fair (although from what I have seen, it is in line with what everyone else has said.

Thanks.

$400 for timing belt is about right.  My rule of thumb:  If you're at 60k, leave the water pump alone; if you're at 120k, get it done.  But that's just me.

Hi,

I forgot to mention that I am at about 65k miles.  I will probably tell them not to do it.  Thanks for the advice.
