I want to put new wheels on my 2008 Sonata but my car has the TPMS.I was told that I can use wheels without sensors as long as I put a wheel with the sensor in the trunk so the system has something to read.Is this true?

That is incorrect.  The system reads 4 sensors.  You would need to have all 4 wheels/tires in the trunk.  Just buy wheels that will accept the original sensors.  Then before getting the tires mounted get the factory sensors transferred to the new wheels.

I took a wheel off and drove around with the spare on earlier today and never got any warning lights.I left the wheel at home so it wouldnt be near the car.This tells me that the car does not know how many sensors are on it. I want to get the factory 17" wheels but I can only find the 06 and 07 wheels which didnt have sensors.

Have you done exactly as told by NovaResource. I mean did the wheels were capable of accept ing the original sensors?

I can only find the 06 and 07 wheels and they will not accept the sensors.

Will the sensors work with the 06-07 wheels that dont have the flat area where the sensor mounts?There is a man selling them on Ebay and he says they will work.
