2008 Accent GS Auto trans
Date Purchased: 8-19-08
Odometer Miles: 434

The transmission shifts very smoothly going from 1st gear to 2nd to 3rd to 4th.  I think there is, however, a problem with the transmission going into 1st gear that I have noticed during the last 100 miles or so. Fluid level is ok.

After backing in reverse gear, then stopping, then moving the shift lever into the drive position, the transmission will delay going into 1st gear and when it goes into 1st gear it will do so with a jolt and a thud. Some of the time the accelerator pedal must be pressed gently to increase engine rpm slightly above idle to get the transmission to go into 1st gear.

The transmission does the above more severely when the engine and transmission are cold, but it also does it after the vehicle is at operating temperature, just less severely.

Do I need to take the car in to have this problem looked at by the service department?

Take it back to the dealer and let them deal with it.  That''s what the warranty is for.

We just got an 08 Accent that has that same "lag" when shifting from reverse. We have less than 2,000 miles on the car.
I''m not noticing any clunking or other symptoms of a problem yet. The lack of friction going from reverse to first may be
part of their plan to increase mpg. We''ll see how it goes. I''m not worried about it yet. Its just kind of annoying at this point,
especially on a hill when you literally roll backwards waiting for the forward gear to engage!

I got a 2008 and it does the same thing.  So far no problems.  I even got a tow package (u-haul) on it.  I would advise a trans. cooler install.  I have been testing the kind from street rods.  They are extruded alum. with fins from the inside to the outside.  I had mine mounted in front of the radiator for full air flow.  I would also advise the "2 pass" style of cooler.  I like these style for their durability and they will still work if they got junk on them too. If ya don''t trust the local dealer mechanics go to a specialist (auto. trans) and have them do a diagostic check.
