A loose connection is a possibility, if you are going to do what Brant suggested why don't you pick up some connection cleaner. It should be in a spray can and does a great job at getting rid of corrosion on connections.

Thanks, Poacher and Brant. Funny you should say that, Brant - I spent some time yesterday afternoon checking all the connections I could see - is there any particular sensor you fancy could be causing this surging?

Poacher, I'm off to buy a tin of carb cleaner to try my luck. Will report back.

Cleaning the throttle body didn't help, so I cleaned up the throttle position sensor as suggested, and that has cured the surging on deceleration. However, the car still roars at cold start, and loses the plot when hot and manoeuvring into a parking place - starts running very fast. Any ideas? If so, thanks! Hippo

Hippo,
I'm thinkin' it's gotta be a sensor issue, however don't bang your head over it. Time to take to a mechanic. Have'em slap it on a computer and see what comes up.
Good Luck!!!
Brant

That may be the best option if nothing else seems to work.
