Hi. I have a 2000 model Excel, the one with the 16v engine. When I start the engine from cold, there is a big puff of smoke from the exhaust, but then no more once it is running. Also, there is a constant sqeaking sound coming from something under the bonnet. I think it is either the power steering pump, or the aircon. It's attached to the upper forward right hand part of the engine block. Is this just a belt requiring replacement, or are there many known issues with these cars? I have no real information about them. It was always serviced by a main dealer, but was due a service at 130,000kms, and it is now on 160,000kms!

Hello,
First off the puff of smoke could be oil getting into your valves which means your in the beginning stages of burning oil. As for the sqealing from your description it sounds like a belt issue.
Good Luck,
Brant

I agree with the sarge on this one. The squeeking is probably your belt and the smoke, well sarge is right.
