does anyone know if you need a special tool to remove the throwout bearing from the pressure plate on a 2002 elantra 5 speed or if i just need to replace the whole clutch

no the bearing just basically snaps into place and should pull out with a little bit of finesse. i would change the clutch if i was already that deep into it plus its only about 100 for a oem kit. also check the shifter fork (which slides through the throwout bearing) they tend to wear after a while causing the bearing to slide off and misalign. use plenty of grease on contact spots when reinstalling. good luck

a pair of snap ring pliers and a really big pry bar usually works for me on these
