Designing -> Help! Check Engine in 99 Accent! (4/30/2006 9:45:44 PM)

I have a new to me 99 Accent. The 'Check Engine' light came on yesterday. I changed the oil less than a 1000 miles ago and all fluid levels are perfect. No odd sounds from the engine. What could it be? And how do I (A) find out and (B) make it go off?? LOL

Thank you in advance!

I am told that it will reset by disconnecting the battery cables for a while. But that seems extreme! You have driven yours without it being off for a year? And it is ok?

"Check Engine" doesnt necessarily mean the motor is about to blow or that it has anything to do with the oil level....there is a separate warning light to tell if the oil is getting low or theres something wrong with oil pressure.Check engine means theres something amiss and it generates a signal to the onboard computer that stores the signal so that it can be diagnosed by a mechanic or someone who has access to the codes and the proper tool to read what the code is.....then you go from there.Where i am at.....if the check engine light is on your car it wont pass emission inspection due to possibility of something bad with one of the emissions components.....driving with the light on for a year can really mess things up under the hood.
Also.....disconnecting the battery cable for a minute or two will reset the system but it will not fix the problem.

Thank you! Do most auto zone type places have the code checker? Or do I need to go to a mechanic? I have a mechanic on staff so to speak, but could just as easily go to auto zone. I am going on a LONG trip on Thursday and need this resolved by then. I know I may have a vacuum leak. And that I have one hose for sure that needs to be replaced. It is about 2 inches long. And on top of the motor. It is crispy. Could something like that be it?

Auto Zone has a free service to check the codes to see what it is....id let them do it first,it could be something really simple to change instead of having a mechanic charge an arm and a leg for.Also....you'll know in advance what the problem is before seeing the mechanic so you can keep him honest to whats really wrong [:D]It could be simple as that little hose....vaccum leak...ya never know.

Got it checked and it appears to be in relation to the gas cap. Or something along those lines. Thank you for all your help!
