Cost To Replace Timing Belt

William Young -> Cost To Replace Timing Belt (7/6/2006 3:07:32 AM)

I am curious as to how much it is costing Hyundai owners across Canada to replace a timing belt in a 2002 Accent 1.6 engine.
I was quoted $530.00 today while I was in the city and stopped into a Hyundai dealer here in British Columbia to get an oil filter.
I asked the question just out of curiosity and I still have another 30K km to go before I actually have to replace it at 100k km.
I thought this price seemed very high and I am going to get a second opinion from another dealer to see how the prices compare.
What are you people paying in the various provinces across Canada ? ?

That was $530.00 Canadian funds.
It was in the closest city. So today out of curiosity I checked at a Hyundai dealer in the closest town. He was very busy and couldn't give me an exact estimate but said it would be *about* $200.00 to $250.00. depending if it has air conditioning or not. Mine does not have air conditioning.
What a difference.
Just goes to show what a rip off some of those authorized dealerships can be within 120 km of each other and how important it is to shop around.

Will the car still be under warranty of you have an independen shop replace it? If so, I'd go that route just because you could shop and compare prices. I've found that the dealer doesn't provide the best prices on some things but on others, the dealer is better.

I know this post is fairly old but I am having a timing belt replaced in a couple days and the price is $280. The service guy said it could be $450 if the tensioners and some other common parts need replacing.

If a timing belt is changed, tensioners should be changed too. Things that are in contact must be changed as a set.

humm this is very pricy for that mine was replaced for $145AUD. its a pain in the ass to do but its only about a 2 hour job and a $65 part so a normal mechanic in australia quotes around $60 an hour to cover their costs so max i would pay is $200.

i think the dealer is ripping you off, id go down to your local garage or mechanics and ask them to quote you then if they come back with something like $400 get them to break down the price and tear it apart as they go. then they will normally knock back the price a lot.

reason i think your seeing this is that hyundai owners are seen as not mechanically minded and they are having a go at you seeing if they can get their christmas bonus early.

My mechanic who is good & v. reasonable, changed my timing belt & water pump on my Ford Festiva for $220.

P.S....Posted somewhere else too, but after the timing belt change (& month old sparkplug wires), I drove from sea level over a 5500 foot mountain pass near Mt. Rainier & returned getting 51.8MPG with the Festiva. So change that timing belt if it is old. Not only will it save your engine, your good MPG should return too.
