I have a faulty fuel check valve in the filler tube on my 2000 elantra sedan 46,000 miles. Found out when I went to fill up and the station pump kept shutting off as though the tank were full. Tried another station pump, same thing. The part is about $12.00 retail. I'm wondering if my backyard mechanic skills would allow me to do this myself, or should I leave to a Pro. Have no idea what diagnosis and labor would cost. The tube comes off the tank via a clamp.
I should add that the last time I filled up, the station pump, out of town, was at a very high pressure. Took half the time to fill the tank as it usually does. Did the high pressure and shutoff from this pump somehow make the valve in the filler tube stick? Have never run into this problem
Thanks for your reply,
Bob soderlund

Most probably is not the fuel check valve. Most times it is due to the vent control system not working properly.Charcoal canister coming apart ect. I have seen this many times before.Either it is due to a problem with the fuel cut valve causing overflow where it lets raw fuel enter the canister and evap system causing damage .It can start at the rear tank area and do as much damage as far as purge valve. If your tank did not get hit on the drivers side which can cause the same complaint I would have it diagnosed by a shop and save your money for the proper repair.
