The dealer drained a pint of oil from the crankcase and put in a pint of additive (brand unknown, I didn't see it) and the whole thing took about 10 minutes. The ticking noise caused by the lifter is gone and when I asked about it coming back they said to call them so they can order parts to replace the lifter(s), install new gaskets, etc.

I think what I will do instead, if the noise returns, is to use a synthetic like Mobil 1 to see if it will provide adequate lubrication. I really don't want to have to go thru a partial teardown of the engine with only 5,800 miles on it.

If anything changes I'll post it.

Mine does like that also at first I thought that the use of synthetic oil is too thin for my engine but found out that the culprit was the damaged engine camshaft. It cost me a lot for such major repair.

It is really important to change your oil regularly as when it breaks down into sludge, it will result to a stuck lifter which consequently causes a tapping noise.

on the start up noise in the garage. when it sounds like a ratchet in the morning right after starting you need to check with your dealer for worn timing chain tensioners they had them in the first models ask to check the tsbs for the azera.otherwise make shure u use the right viscosety 5w-20/30 or synthetic since the new motors are needing the thin stuff to work right.

I now have 7,200 miles on the car and no stuck lifter like noise since they put the additive in it. I will insist on synthetic oil with a 5W-20W viscosity when it changed. I will also remember about having them check and relative TSB's if the noise returns.

I am headed to my Hyundai dealer first thing tomorrow morning as the clicking noise has returned and I want them to fix it for good. I noticed, over the Holidays, that I did not hear this noise until the engine got up to operating tempeature, and its louder when standing on the passenger side of the car. I am prepared to leave the car and pick it up when done and will post the findings so others will know the outcome.

My click returned after the dealer changed the oil last week.  Rogerf, please keep us posted on your situation.  I am going to see if the noise disappears after an upcoming road trip.

I called the Dealer this morning to get an update and was advised they had been backed up and had not yet looked at my problem. I told them to hold off, this is the 3rd day and I need the car tomorrow and Friday. They said we can agree on a fixed time later for them to have the car 3-5 days in case its necessary to 'dive' in to the engine. It seems they will have to pull the motor to fix internal things like a cam or lifters.

Had oil changed and asked dealer to listen to engin noise again.  They heard it and believe it to be from the timing belt tensioner problem.  Next week they are going to replace it.  Thankfully they will give me a loaner. I don't like the idea of my engine being pulled out, but the noise is spoiling an otherwise great driving experience.

I went back to the Dealer the 4th time a couple of weeks ago. (I am behind on posts due to catching the cold from HELL!)  They had the car for two days, changed the oil, and then called to say they could not duplicate the problem. They even drove it some 30 miles to make sure the engine was warmed up. This was after they heard it 'ticking' when I first pulled in.  I picked up the car, drove a couple of miles and filled the tank, and it was quiet. By the time I got home (32) miles it was ticking again.

I first called for the Sales Manager but he was on the phone. I then called the Service Department but ended up on their recorder. I left a message with them and put the phone near the engine so they could hear the noise. I never heard from them.

Last night I recieved a phone survey from Hyundai. I dissed them real bad about service and told them Toyota was building  new dealership which would open this Fall and it looks like I will have to go back to them since the Dealer has soured me on Hyundai!

I'll wait to see what happens but I won't volutarilly take the car back for repair. Its under warranty, I have my service receipts to show I am following the instructions in the manual, and I have 100,000 miles to drive without worry of cost to me.

Dealer has had my car for 5 days now. They called and said they may be finished on Tuesday, they said "it is a BIG job".  I really don't care how long it takes, I have their loaner Sonata. I just want the car back in one piece with no noise.
