I always thought the battery provided power to the A/C.....lights...and everything else.The alternator's job is to make sure the electrical components dont get too much juice and to regulate power throughout the car.

it has other fun facts on this site including basics on how to replace the alternator. They also have a questions forum that they answer but for any parts like the alternator, they reccomend replacing it with high end OEM parts. Not parts with a lifetime replacment.
