My folks have a 99 Elantra wagon. My father absolutely loves the vehicle but its recently developed problems and the dealer quoted $1100 for repairs. They have asked me to take it and try to fix it. Im a fairly experienced hobbyist mechanic but I dont know much about this car. My father, though I love him, refuses to admit he is somewhat unknowlegeable about newer cars. All his descriptions of the problem lead me to belive it has bad lifters. He said the dealership said it needed a valve adjustment ($1100 for an adjustment?) when I quizzed him more he said the adjustment included replacing the lifters. It all sounds like bad hydraulic lifters to me but he swears it is a solid lifter car. So can someone give me a basic rundown on if it is solid or hydraulic and what we might be looking at for repairs. It is very high milage and he says it is making a very loud valve clatter.

Thanks
Jim

well, the 99 Elantra have a "cup" style Hydraulic lifters.
Let's start with ""what is the complaint"", why do you need to replace the lifters ??

To be honest I still havent seen the car or been able to evaluate the actual complaint as dad lives about 4 hours from here. But when he picked it up from the dealer and tried to drive it home the engine siezed on him and that pretty much sealed the deal for going ahead and replacing the motor. The car is at around 150,000 miles and I have been able to source a 20,000 engine and trans for less than $500 so it will give him a new lease on life :)
