hey guys I want to add an alarm to my 2001 2 door accent, but also want added door locks and keyless entry, I've done a search and read some things on it. can anyone tell me:

-how hard it is to install an alarm.
-what alarms will work
-what extra acctuators I need.
-what relays if any
-best place for mounting it?
-part numbers........and any other good info
-is it worth it to just have it done at a shop?

I want all my locks including maybe the hatch to work at the same time.

Hi [8|],

It's probably not beyond the capabilities of an enthusiastic methodical person, but as someone who has had professional dealings with insurance investigators, my advice to you would be to have your alarm system installed professionally by a REPUTABLE installer. The reason for that is, in the (hopefully unlikely)event of theft, you, as the installer come under suspicion as someone who may benefit from the theft and having intimate knowledge of how the system was installed will raise a red flag to the investigator.

Typical sensors include door, ignition, shock(or tow), battery disconnect.

As for mounting, somewhere really bloody difficult to get at, your installer will help there. DO NOT put stickers advertising your alarm type on the car.

If the vehicle warrants it, consider a vehicle tracking system. They do work very well and can result in arrests (gotta love that!)

I'm currently in florida, not sure about the tracking system. why don't alarms come plug and play?

Hi again,

Consider the real cost should your vehicle be stolen and not recovered.

Will your insurance company provide a temporarary replacement vehicle while you are waiting for your claim to be processed, or will you be relying on public transport or friends to get around or forking out for a hire car?

Your new vehicle would then have to be road registered, perhaps. It would have to be insured, with possibly higher premiums as a result of your claim.

A tracking system, preferably monitored, will help you get your vehicle back and avoid those hassles. The monitored system will have a monitoring bureau that is able to respond to your alarms and act according to the alarms received most times before you. The tracking system also has an active immobiliser which allows the vehicle engine to be switched off, under police directive of course!

Some alarms do come plug and play, particularly those installed ex-factory. The issue there is that by law, here in Australia at least, vehicle manufacturers have to provide service manuals detailing all fitted devices. It caused grief over here, particularly in the case of HSV high performance vehicles which are predominately based on the Commodore four door sedan and lately on the Monaro(Pontiac GTO to you). Thieves were able to walk into a dealership and purchase a service manual and obtain intimate knowledge of the vehicle security systems.

Not a fabulous state of affairs as you can imagine.

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post is to ensure that you system has a good immobiliser or two, preferably disabling the cars ecu.
