Timing belt

n2ho -> Timing belt (6/11/2007 7:18:08 PM)

I own a 2001 Sonata V6 and have only 28k miles on it. However, the owner manual recommends to replace the timing belt every 4 years or 60k miles. Since I have this car for already 6 years but have low mileage on it do I need to replace the timing belt now? Or should I wait til it'll be around 60k miles?
Thanks.

I would consider changeing it now...it's kinda like when they say , change your oil every 3,000 miles or 4 months , whicever comes 1st

Does the V6 have a belt or does that just apply to the 4?  A lot of V6s have chains.

If you have a belt, the key phrase is "whichever comes first".  For you it was time before mileage.  If your belt goes and trashes the engine, Hyundai is off the hook.

o1 -sonata would have the belt and i would difintly change it - there also a hydrulic tensioner that may be leaking i would consider changing it while your there

Yes, if you have the belt, then definitely change it out.

Thanks everybody for your advices, I went to the dealer yesterday and the belt was changed ($475 total).

That's not too bad.  Being a V6, does it have twin belts or only one?  I really haven't looked into the Sonata all that much.

It is written in the invoice "1 timing belt, price: $105.53" so I assume there is one belt in V6 Sonata 2001. This is small V6, only 2.5 liters.

Okay.  Just curious.

The timing belt if not driven a whole lot after time will start to conform to the sahpe in which it sits. So they say change in out after 4 yrs, especially if it isn't driven much. I've seen one of these belts break because it sat to long in one spot and conformed to that shape..after it was ran for a couple weeks...bam! It broke..lucky it wasnt an interference motor.
