The Hyundai Excel was produced and sold by the Hyundai Motor company from 1985 until 1994 and was quite popular in all markets. The Excel has been sold under several names such as the Hyundai Pony, the Hyundai Presto, and the Mitsubishi Precis. The Excel was a front wheel drive vehicle and was eventually replaced by the Hyundai Accent in 1995. Though the Excel was known as the Pony in some markets, it was actually a replacement for the Hyundai Pony of the 1980's. The Excel is notable because it was the first car that Hyundai exported to the United States.
The Hyundai Excel was available in both hatchback and four door body types. In addition there was a coupe version of the Excel sold from 1989 on which was called the Hyundai Scoupe. The first front wheel drive car produced by Hyundai, the Excel was notable for so many reasons and Hyundai was understandably proud of the progress they were making as this was a big leap into the North American market, and the Excel did quite well. In 1990 a new generation of the Excel was introduced and this generation would last until 1994. This second generation, known as the X2, did receive a slight facelift, making the vehicle more modern looking.
