I've been reading up a lot on the transmission issues everywhere I can find but looking for a bit more input. I bought this 2000 Elantra Wagon (135000)very cheap and am happy with the thing. I do have this engine flare when it goes into 4th (OD) and the RPM tends to wander easily at freeway speeds like the lockup isn't holding very well. Slight gas pedal changes will kick up the RPM to almost 3000 from 2600 then wander back down again. I get no codes but we are careful and feather the pedal well enough to keep it locked up as much as possible.
I do get a little RPM flare sometimes in 2-3 shift but rarely. When running with OD locked out it seems to be fine, a little sloppy but OK for it's age. Oil is a little dirty and I need to change it but if I do I was thinking "end clutch" at the same time.

Does this sound like just an end clutch issue or should I be looking somewhere else?

Sounds like new trans time. Check car-parts.com for a newsed trans in your area.

 

When was the fluid and transmission filter changed last?
Sometime transmission additives like trans-x can help AFTER ones know hold old the fluid and filter is.
