Default 2003 hard starts / Purge valve noise?

My 2003 Accent takes 2 cranks to start... the problem occurs more when it is hot outside (phoenix in the summer). Also once the enigine is running it makes like a dieseling noise when you let off the gas like a timing issue, but then clears up once the enigne warms up. So the symptoms are the engine is rough when its cold, but only when its hot outside. Any ideas?

Also, I've recently noticed a noise coming from the underneath in the rear by the gas fill just after the engine is shut off. Its sounds like an electric motor for about a minute then like a valve shutting or opening? I've reviewed some books and think itssomething like the fuelpurge canister and valve? Should it be making that noise after shutting down the engine?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.. thanks
Go Hyundai! Wish I had a tiburon

Default RE: 2003 hard starts / Purge valve noise?

Hard starting is usually more of a sign of bad fuel filter or pump. The other symptoms you describe I'm not sure what to thnk of but they may or may not have anything to do with the hard starting.

I have an old Escort that, if it's warm out, the car has been running, but then sits for maybe a half hour or so, will often not start the first time I try. Sometimes not even the second. Eventually it always starts though. Someone over ont he CarTalk forum a couple years ago told me to try this- that when the car was warmed up but sitting for a while like that, turn the key from OFF to ON but not to start, and listen to the fuel pump which goes on for a few seconds. If the car does not start, the pump shuts back off as a safety precaution. He said once I heard it shut off, turn the key back to OFF, then ON then OFF for several cycles (4 or 5), then finally turn it all the way to start. If it starts right up by doing that when I would expect it to not want to start, he said, the problem is the fuel pump seals are leaking, allowing a vacuum bubble to form in the lines or some such. Well, that's exactly what happened, but since the car has never left me strandend and it's not my primary car and I know how to start it when it doesn't want to start, I've never gotten around to replacing the pump.
