Elantra 2002 will not fire up.

Went to start the car 4 weeks ago and although it turned over well it would not fire up. Had it towed into dealer who has struggled to find the fault. Eventually (after 4 weeks) found that there was no compression on all 4 cyclinders and after replacement of a new head gasket managed to get the car to run, all be it, very erratically. Now they suspect either electrical or timing problems. The car is mid 2002 with only 35000 kms on the clock. Has anyone else had simlilar experiences and if so how could such a breakdown occur? For me there seems no reason for such a breakdown as it was running well the evening before.

the dealership must be an awful one if they couldnt find a bad head gasket, as it is a fairly easy issue to diagnose...it could be that you just got a faulty head gasket...and it went bad...but once the head gasket goes bad, it can often effect other things...spark plugs, catalytic convertor, etc.
