ELECTRIC COOLING FANS NOT OPERATING

Hi all:

My '98 Tiburon has finally gotten sick after all these years. The car was so reliable but now
needs some attention.

Last night the temp gause shot up to red. After pulling over and letting the car cool down
I see that both Cooling Fans are not working. I put the Airconditioner on and the fans
spun but then stopped.

I can't operate the car in traffic.

What should I look for.. a fan relay, a thermostatic sensor to trigger the cooling fans, more than these?

The car does not leak coolant and the rest of the car seems fine.

Tomorrow I plan to drive the car over to my garage and have a good look. It just may be
something that needs a some parts I can change. It would be better to know beforehand
what and where to look.

RE: ELECTRIC COOLING FANS NOT OPERATING

I did a bit of troubleshooting yesterday.

Opened the hood and started the engine.

Waited until the temperature gauge reached mid-way.

Continued to wait but the electric cooling fans did not
turn-on despite the fact that the Temp gauge began to
increase towards maximum.

Verified that the sensor that feeds the temp gauge was
working. I doconnected and the gauge dropped to zero.

There is another larger sensor that is part of the Thermostat
housing. I was not able to remove the connector for fear
of breaking it.

With the car fully warmed-up I turned-on the Air Conditioning.
The electric fans both started to spin, but very slowly as if they
were on a low speed setting.

I verified the AC relay in the fuse box and all fuses as OK.

Could it be that the temperature sending unit is open or
shorted and causing the engine control unit not to operate the
cooling fans?

Or are these symptoms indications of a more complicated electrical
problems.

It is hard to tell. The one thing I am bad with is electrical systems.

I fixed the problem....

The symptoms were all there pointing towards the temp sending unit
that is fastened to the thermostat housing.

There are two temp sending units (thermistors).

One controls the temp gauge and is the smalle of the two and has
a single male spade and a female spade connector with a black rubber
shroud with a whitish grease putty like materials.

Replacement of the other sensor with a 3/4" Deep Ratchet was simple.
I put one winding of some teflon tape around the threads and re-installed
the new unit.

Immediatelty I turned the 98 Tiburon on and waited until the temp gauge
reached the middle. Suddenly the large cooling fan turned-on.

When the AC unit is turned on both fans run.

I am happy and hope that this helps anyone with a similar Cooling Fan
problem.
