This is a revision of an earlier post. I have 2000 Elantra GLS Sedan, 47,000 miles. The fuel tank pressure sensor has gone South on my Elantra. If I try to put gas in the car, the station pump will shut off as though the tank were full. This sensor is located near the fuel tank. The charcoal canister is also involved. Somehow there is quite a bit of liquid gas in the canister. Not just fumes. The cannister is located behind the left front inner fender. The canister and the pressure valve work together. A trip to the dealer supplied the above information. The job is going to cost $340.00 Anyone heard of this condition before? If I were a bit younger, I would tackle the job. I had never heard of a fuel tank pressure sensor before. If I pull into a gas station with say a vintage '60's car, would that car have one of these sensors? I always thought a built in sensor in the gas pump handle sensed when to shut off the flow of gas. Now that I think of it, when I fill my five gallon gas can, the pump will shut off when the gas gets toward the top. The only reason I can think of for an automobile fuel tank pressure sensor is to prevent gasoline from splashing the customer or some emission thing.
