I'm guessing its a stick? It could be your throttle positioning sensor.

yeah it's stick.. that is what my boyfriend said but he wanted to make sure... he said that i would probally have to call the dealership and pay an arm and a leg for a new one... unless there is something else i can do.....

RE: rpms still going when out of gear
The engine computer sees a signal that the car is moving and keeps the rpm's up to keep emissions lower. I don't remember how high the rpms go but even when I had a car jacked up and running, if a wheel was turning the rpm's would go up.

You could take the air intake hose off at the throttle body and look at the throttle plate and clean it with some 2+2 carb cleaner. and make sure the throttle cable isn't too tight at the throttle body.

RE: rpms still going when out of gear
this looks more like a problem with the TPS
